Clermont, IN (August 19, 2001) - For the second consecutive event, Junior Hanley was the dominant machine and recorded his second straight victory in the Kendall Late Model Series. Hanley passed Kenny Tweedy on lap 19 and then held off Scott Hantz and Brian Ross for the UAW Labor 100 victory presented by Crystal Flash. Hanley collected $4,900 for his sixth career event including a $1,400 bonus from Rug Doctor Rents.
"It's great to win here at Indianapolis Raceway Park, " said Junior Hanley in victory lane. "The car was great all day and when it started to rain there at the end I took it easy, " added the pilot of the Big Rigs Truck & Trailer Maintenance / Rick Cole Enterprise Chevrolet.
At the drop of the green flag, Kenny Tweedy leaped out to the lead from his outside front row position with Hanley, Bull Baker, Peter Cozzolino and Ray Skillman all chasing him. Tweedy was able to hold the point, but Hanley stayed on the decklid of his EDCO General Contractors / Keith Electric Chevrolet through the early portion of the event.
On the 19th lap, Hanley made his move after battling several laps with the 1997 series champion and then completing the pass. After Hanley was in front he started to distance himself from Tweedy and the remaining front runners. While Hanley took the lead, Scott Hantz and Brian Ross began their charge to the front.
On the 24th circuit, Ross advanced to the seventh position with Hantz in ninth spot. They continued charging as Ross was sixth on lap 40 and fifth on the 44th go-around. Also during this stretch Cozzolino was charging from the back of the pack after being involved in an altercation with Bull Baker in the early part of the event.
On lap 45, Scott Neal and Ray Skillman the third and fourth place machines made contact towards the end of the front straightaway and the duo hammered the outside wall ending the day for both part-time competitors.
When racing action resumed after Bret James through the green flag, the second place machine of Tweedy suffered a right-front flat tire and was forced to make an unscheduled pit stop. Ross got pined behind Tweedy and Hantz slid underneath the Wade Construction Chevrolet for second place.
The remainder of the event, Hanley was able to hold his own as Hantz and Ross were running in the second and third positions, but were unable to cut the margin to the leader at the checkered. J.R. Roahrig crossed the stripe in fourth and Cozzolino railed for fifth place honors.
Junior Hanley was the Contractors Underground fast qualifier with a lap of 22.100 seconds (111.747 mph). Joel Kauffman was named Hubler Group Rookie of the Race. Junior Hanley was the Jasper Engines & Transmission Crew Chief of the Race. Bobby Parsley collected the Lane Automotive / ISKY Cams Hardcharger honors after gaining 15 positions in the event.
The next Kendall Late Model Series next event is the first annual Kendall Klash on Sunday, September 2 at Anderson Speedway. The Eagle Creek Aviation 150 will be on Sunday, September 3.
