BANKFIN TOURING CARS KYALAMI

Briton Mark Peters scored his first win in the Bankfin Touring Car series taking the chequer in the second race of the day on Saturday in the BP Nissan Primera to back up his team-mate Giniel De Villiers' first race win on a day marred by deplorable driving and mechanical mayhem.

The first race was red-flagged after a first corner incident eliminated seven of the 15 starters when Mike Briggs (Sasol BMW) hit the rear of Anthony Taylor (Engen Audi) sending Taylor into a spin, both ending on the side of the track. In the confusion, Shaun Watson-Smith (Petronas Opel Vectra) hit another car and was then hit himself by George Bezuidenhout (Nissan Engine Exchange Sentra) while stationary.

Taylor managed to get back onto the grid for the restart, but the others were all out on the spot. Chris Aberdein (Engen Audi) had his own accident when the fire extinguisher set itself off inside the car blocking his vision and sending him into the wall at Nashua.

From the restart, Giniel de Villiers (BP Nissan Primera) went away to win by five seconds as the war continued behind him. Shaun van der Linde (Sasol BMW) held second place for the first five laps but Duncan Vos (BP Nissan Primera) forced his way up the inside at the Vodacom Bowl, punting the BMW and puncturing a tyre, forcing Van der Linde's retirement.

On lap eight, Mark Peters (BP/Slush Puppie Nissan Primera) passed Vos for second place only to have the latter make a move on him a lap later resulting in both nearly going off and letting Marco dos Santos (Nissan Sentra) through to third.

That left De Villiers ahead of Peters and Dos Santos as they crossed the line for the last lap, Peters thought the race was over and backed off, handing second to Dos Santos and allowing Terry Moss (Engen Audi) and Deon Joubert (Petronas Opel Vectra) through as well dropping him to fourth ahead of Vos who was later excluded for his transgressions.

Briggs was a key figure in the mayhem at the start of race two trying to force his way between Van der Linde and Dos Santos coming off the start line - hitting Van der Linde then Dos Santos pitching the latter into Anthony Taylor (Engen Audi) who ended his race in the wall.

Up front, Van der Linde led off the line from Vos, Peters, and Briggs - who got away with the start incident without damage - Watson-Smith, Aberdein and Joubert. De Villiers was at the back of the field after having to start from the pit lane after his car would not start on the grid.

On lap four Vos made another suicide move on Van der Linde at the Vodacom Bowl. Van de Linde was covering the inside line, but Vos came from well back and went onto the grass on the inside of the corner to get past.

Following the inevitable contact Van der Linde dropped down to sixth behind De Villiers, while Vos lost a place to Peters, who took the lead, and Briggs. Briggs challenged Peters hard for a lap, but before he could get ahead, Vos got the jump on him through the Mineshaft on lap five.

Briggs then threw it away when he clipped the tyres on the inside of the Kink on the same lap dropping him to eighth.

Peters then led a Nissan train all the way to the flag as Vos and De Villiers sat on his tail to finish in that order. Vos was later penalised 6 seconds for his move on Van der Linde, dropping him to fourth behind Van der Linde. Briggs was also excluded from the results.
