KYALAMI RACES 01 AUGUST 1998 ROUNDS 9 & 10 ONE TWO THREE, at Last!!!

Nissan had great celebrations on Saturday evening after a well earned 1,2,3 overall position for the day, after two eventful races.

A record entry of seven class A cars pointed the way for an exciting qualifying session. Once again the works MTN Nissan Maximas of John Craig and Devon Juby led the way, with Juby setting a stunning lap time of 2:01.2 to take pole position 0.97s ahead of John Craig. Anthony Taylor was next up in his BMW, followed by Colin Hastie in the Netstar Spanjaard Terrano Motors Maxima. Qualifying was Hastie's first run on the latest level Goodyear tyre, which had shown a good advantage over the previous tyre. Robbie Smith followed Hastie by 0.8s, with Steve Wyndham and Mike O'Sulivan in the other BMWs further behind.

Race one saw Hastie with a rocket start into second position behind John Craig for the first lap. "Best start of my life" smiled Hastie, who waved Juby through on the approach to Goodyear corner. "there was no point trying to keep him behind, so I really made it easy for him to get by and not loose time."

This left Hastie to fend off three hot BMW drivers, with Taylor banging at the Maximas rear bumper. This fantastic close dice continued for 5 laps until Taylor got alongside the Maxima into Goodyear corner, and finally ahead at the first of the Esses. "I thought of a heavy sporting challenge in the Esses, but with 2 yellow cards already, I thought it best to behave" was the Nissan drivers comment.. Taylor then set after the MTN Maximas, who had opened a gap. Smith had already pitted with a blown motor, and O'Sullivan was running with the Class B cars. Wyndham had dropped almost 16 seconds behind Hastie at the flag.

Race 2 saw further excitement as Taylor ran wide through Goodyear sweep on the first lap and ended his race in the kitty litter. After an extremely physical first lap, Hastie was left in 4th place behind Wyndham, with the two factory Nissans again at the head of the field. In the dice of the day, Hastie tried all to get ahead of the BMW, in a race reminiscent of the wars these two drivers had fought during the late 80's, when both drove in Class E of the Stannic Group N Championship. The two cars were side by side on numerous occasions, and bits of bodywork flew at most corners. Lap 5 saw Hastie finally get passed the BMW into the fast Pennzoil Curve, and pull away from Wyndham. The gap to the MTN cars was down to 4s by the end of the race. "That was my best race in the Maxima" smiled a very happy driver. "Nissan have shown great faith in me, and I am so happy to be able to reward them with this 1 2 3. This result is for Glynn Hall, John Jessup, and Cathy. Now I feel a party coming on!"

With the next race meeting in Cape Town on the 12th of September, there is time for some development on the car. A new engine and gearbox is due to be fitted, and an extended visit to Cornrights is overdue.
