Pole position and three wins from as many starts, stamped round three of the Reward Insurance Australian Sports Sedan Championship as a perfect result for Alfa Chev driver Tony Ricciardello. The West Australian defending his championship, moves to equal second in the title chase but trails series leader Kerry Baily by 40 points. Baily finished second overall and actually stretched his lead in the series.

But a bad result for the Tasmanian in his Nissan 300ZX/Chev at either of the remaining two rounds will open the series up. Third in round three was the local South Australian David Brenssell debuting in the championship in his Holden Commodore/Chev ahead of the luckless Saab/Chev pair of Darren Hossack and Dean Randle.

The third and final heat of the round three saw the top ten finishers from race two start in reverse order. Victorian Rodney Woods (Commodore/Chev) was the initial leader passed by South Australia's Mick Monterosso in the Ford Escort/Chev. He was soon under enormous pressure from Hossack and Ricciardello with both getting by on lap four.

Shortly after, Hossack went off into the tyre barrier exiting turn as a result of a throttle jam. A safety car was brought out so the car could be removed, and with Ricciardello leading and in charge, the result was beyond doubt. Monterosso was soon out of the race with broken steering, leaving Randle to fend off the slow starting Baily. In fourth place was Daniel Jameson until mechanical gremlins set in and forced the NSW Jaguar XKR/Chev to retire.

Despite a lose on the last lap, Randle held second as Baily had nowhere to go and was forced to stop. They resumed the last half lap, continuing their dice just ahead of NSW's Mark Stinson in his Holden Calibra/Chev. Woods finished next while Dean Camm (Honda Prelude/Chev) who recovered from an early pitstop to rectify an oil leak.

Brenssell was the next finisher sans most of the front spoiler of the Commodore/Chev which was a result of a clash with Ray Ayton's Calibra/Chev when the pair were dueling for seventh. The latter pulled out shortly after with a broken oil line as a result of the collision.
