First win for Philipp Peter, Alex Zampedri takes points lead.
Stuttgart/Monaco. At the most prestigious and difficult race of the year, Philipp Peter pocketed his first Porsche Michelin Supercup victory. The Austrian-born resident of Monaco took up the 16 lap sprint through the narrow streets of Monaco from pole position to take the chequered flag.
The 33-year-old racing professional came under immense pressure from Germany's Wolf Henzler who, with second place, secured his best Supercup result so far this season. For the 27-year-old, this was his second podium result.
Third place-getter Marco Werner from Germany, Peter's team mate in the Infineon Farnbacher squad, brought home precious championship points for his outfit and now ranks second overall. With fourth in Monaco Alessandro Zampedri (Italy) takes over the points' lead from Stephane Ortelli (Monaco). Zampedri has taken three podium finishes from four rounds.
Travelling to his home race as points' leader and having won here for the last two years, Ortelli had high hopes for a hattrick. However, bad luck hit even before the sprint began when he caught a slow puncture. In lap 4 Ortelli's Porsche spun right in front of Timo Bernhard's GT3. The German wasn't able to avoid Ortelli's Porsche, both drivers retired. 32-year-old Ortelli now ranks third overall.
Philipp Peter (winner): "The pressure was on after I brought home no points at all from the last race in Austria. This is my second home race so I was keen for a good result. I concentrated completely on every single lap. It was hot and Wolf was putting the pressure on from behind. All in all a perfect weekend."
Wolf Henzler (second): "My only chance to snatch Philipp was at the start. My start was good, but so was his. In the first half of the race I tried to force Philipp to make a mistake - no go. After my accident at the Austrian race two weeks ago I needed these points."
Marco Werner (third) "This was a race without mistakes. In the beginning I wanted to put pressure on Wolf but to be honest I had my hands full trying to keep up with the two at the front. I'm pleased. The points are important."
Alessandro Zampedri (fourth): "My start was great but after several laps I noticed my brakes were fading. Luckily I had plenty of space behind me so I could enjoy the landscape and even take the points' lead."
Ryo Fukuda (VIP driver, tenth) "I had a great battle with Alex Davison. In the end my brakes were not like new and Alex was fighting for points so I decided not to defend my position at any cost. It was great fun."
