Marco Werner wins - Title will be decided in Indianapolis

Stuttgart. After the tenth and last round of the Porsche Michelin Supercup on European soil the race for the title is still open. With his victory at Monza, Marco Werner from Switzerland closed the gap to the points leader Stephane Ortelli (Monaco). Ortelli finished the 12 lap sprint in sixth.

The fight for the Cup will now be played out over two heats at Indianapolis, where the Porsche Michelin Supercup runs as support to the US Grand Prix on 28-29 September.

Three drivers travel to the season final still holding title chances: Besides Ortelli and Werner, Alessandro Zampedri (Italy) could theoretically snatch the Cup although his chances are slim after finishing eight in his home race.

Second qualifier, Timo Bernhard, experienced bad luck in the race: in the opening phase he kept Marco Werner under pressure. Lap eight saw Bernhard overtaken Werner, who managed to regain the lead after a hundred metres. In the last corner before the flag Bernhard couldn't defend himself from an attack by Australian Alex Davison. The German had to let Davison by, with Frenchman Christophe Bouchut making the most of the situation and shooting past the reigning German Carrera Cup champion as well.

Marco Werner (winner): "My third win of the season was the most difficult. At the beginning I had hoped to pull away from the others, but my fading brakes decided otherwise. When Timo shot past me I wasn't too concerned because I knew he was much too fast and I could quickly counter attack. I'm still not thinking about the title."

Alexander Davison (second): "Shortly after the start I managed to outbrake Stephane before the chicane. Then Bouchut and I began a huge duel, and I finally outbraked him in the third lap. At last I caught Timo and applied the pressure. Shortly before the finish Timo made a slight mistake and that was my chance. It was a hard but fair overtaking manoeuvre."

Christophe Bouchut (third): "I watched the fight in front of me and waited. In the final corner Timo and Alex were all over each other, and I went for it. My tactic worked perfectly."

Timo Bernhard (fourth): "Today I was very fast and kept Marco under pressure. But I missed third gear twice accelerating from the chicane. That's why Alex caught me. In the last corner he really attacked and squeezed past me. Our Porsches swapped a little paint. I lost a lot of speed and Bouchut took advantage of the situation."

Stephane Ortelli (sixth): "Right after the start I was too cautious. Someone bumped my rear, and afterwards the handling of the car wasn't quite right. Later I touched a competitor in front of me and that affected the aerodynamics. Considering everything that happened, I'm happy to take home points for sixth place."
