FORT WORTH-DALLAS (April 28, 2001) - Kris Rourke of Temecula, Calif. barely nosed out Clifford Adoptante of Riverside, Calif. to capture Saturday night's Young Chevrolet AirMX Challenge presented by KZPS freestyle motocross event at Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track. The victory was worth $10,000 to Rourke, his first of the year on the national motocross motorcycle circuit.
Rourke put together a near flawless performance that included freestyle aerobatic moves such as the Rodeo, Knack Knack, Double Heart Attack, Seat Grab Indian Air and a double helicopter. Rourke scored 92.83 points for his performance to edge Adoptante's 92.00. Adoptante, the AirMX Challenge point leader, earned $7,500.
Justin Homan of Portland, Ore. advanced through two preliminary qualifying rounds of jumps and surprised the crowd by placing third with a score of 90.50. Homan earned $5,000 for his initial top-five performance of the year. Earlier in the evening, Homan cleared the 21-foot level to win the Step Up competition, a motorcycle high jump contest.
Rounding out the top five were Jeremy "Twitch" Stenberg and Ronnie Faisst, both of Canyon Lake, Calif. Stenberg logged a score of 87.00 and won $3,500 while Faisst posted an 85.50 score and collected $3,000 for his efforts.
Preliminary round victories were scored by Rourke in Round 2 while Doug Parsons of Canyon Lake, Calif. kicked off the program by capturing Round 1. A total of 18 riders competed for the $56,000 purse.
