TOP SIX FOR FOGG BUT PEDERSEN OUT IN TURN ONE INCIDENT
There was good news and bad news for the Caltex Racing New Zealand V8 Touring Car team in the first race at the final round of the 2004/05 Parker ENZED championship at Pukekohe's Pukekohe Park Raceway today.
The good news was that Caltex Vortex driver Angus Fogg set the fifth fastest lap time in the morning qualifying session and finished the afternoon's eight lap race in sixth place after a race-long duel with championship leader Wade Henshaw.
The bad news was the multi-car pileup at the start of the race which eliminated six cars including Pedersen's Caltex Havoline #96 car.
Despite struggling with a fuel starvation problem in qualifying, Pedersen set the eighth fastest time in the morning qualifying session and started the rolling start 12 lap race from the fourth row of the grid beside championship leader Wade Henshaw.
The cars in front of Pedersen and Henshaw managed to get into and through the high speed first turn unscathed but all hell broke loose behind Pedersen and the Caltex Havoline driver was a passenger as his #96 car was hit from the right hand side and sent at high speed into the armco barrier on the outside of the corner.
Pedersen emerged shaken but otherwise unhurt but his car sustained heavy damage and early indications are that it is unlikely to be able to be repaired in time for tomorrow's two Parker ENZED Championship races.
It was an unfortunate and unnecessary end for former series champ Pedersen and his car, with both Caltex Racing Ford Falcons on the pace from the minute they were unloaded from the transporter.
Fogg set the third fastest lap time in practice on Friday with Pedersen in 12th, then after changes to the cars before qualifying Fogg was fifth fastest and Pedersen eighth.
Fogg remains upbeat about his car saying that though he didn't get it 100% in qualifying the speed is definitely there.
"We missed the green lap window (in terms of the tyres' ideal temperature), mainly due to traffic but fifth was not a bad effort considering. The car wasn't 100%, but it was probably 90, and I was reasonably happy.
There are two more Parker ENZED New Zealand V8 Touring Car races on the programme this weekend, the first due to start at 1.20 pm, the second at 3.20pm.
