YOULDEN EXTENDS LEAD IN SUPER SEDAN SERIES
Australian driver Luke Youlden has extended his lead in the Schaeffer Oil N.Z. Super Sedan Series after the second round at Manfeild Park, Feilding this weekend.
After taking two wins from three races at the opening round in Taupo three weeks ago Youlden achieved the same success ratio in his second outing of the series at the Manawatu track.
The Melbourne driver took both wins in the Powerbuilt Tools / Bed Rumours Handcrafted Beds Ford Mustang in tricky conditions at the 3.03 kilometre circuit today.
The track was extremely wet for this morning's race, resulting in the cars starting in single file behind the safety car. Youlden blasted away from the start and pulled away to a good lead driving the 735hp Mustang on wet tyres in the conditions. He had a slight "off" at Higgins Corner during the race, losing 23 seconds in the process, but had such a lead that the incident did not threaten his position. He reeled off the closing laps and managed to lap everyone in the field other than the second placegetter, Andy Greenslade.
The third and final race of the weekend was held in drying conditions that made tyre choice for the race very difficult. In a touch and go decision the Powerbuilt Team opted to go with slick, dry weather tyres in a last minute choice. While it was a good decision the track was still only 80% dry which meant Youlden's lap times during the race were 2 to 3 seconds off his qualifying pace of the previous day.
However it did not prevent him from pulling away to another win ahead of Greenslade and third placed Grant Brennan who had run the earlier wet race on slicks.
At the end of another very successful weekend in the Powerbuilt Tools / Bed Rumours Handcrafted Beds Ford Mustang, Youlden said he was disappointed that it had rained. "I think we had another second or maybe one and a half to two seconds in the car, but we couldn't show our ultimate pace. However that is how it goes sometimes", he said.
Youlden had been keen for dry conditions on the second day of the meeting after setting a new lap record for the Super Sedan Series at the track in Saturday's opening race. He had started the weekend by qualifying the Mustang 8 seconds faster than the second car. However he could only take 5th place in Saturday's race as he coped with a broken power steering line and a 148 second handicap.
Youlden's next outing in the Schaeffer Oil N.Z. Super Sedan Series will be at Pukekohe near Auckland over the weekend of 2/3 December. The event should be quite spectacular and with it's proximity to the festive season series organisers are promising a very special atmosphere. That includes free access to the cars of the Super Sedan Series and series personnel are keen to see a large turnout of spectators to enjoy the occasion.
Prior to that event Luke will be back in action in the Powerbuilt Falcon at Round 2 of the NZV8s Championship at Powerbuilt Tools International Raceway at Ruapuna, Christchurch over the weekend of 25/26 November
