YOULDEN OVERCOMES ISSUES TO RECORD THREE FINISHES

A problem that cost the Powerbuilt Falcon horsepower made it a difficult weekend for Luke Youlden at Round 6 of the NZV8s Championship at Teretonga Park near Invercargill this weekend.

After gaining a solid 7th placing in yesterday's opening race of the weekend Youlden started this morning's race from 8th on the grid. The race was an eventful one as within seconds there was carnage at the first corner. The red flag was shown immediately and the remaining runners returned to the grid to await a restart. Youlden had been close to the action saying that he saw tyre smoke coming from Clark Proctor's car and then Proctor and Andy Booth were both sideways across the track. Youlden managed to bring the Powerbuilt Falcon through the confusion but several cars behind him were not so lucky.

The restart took place after the incident was cleared and Youlden lined up in 5th place behind the pace car. He settled into that position behind Angus Fogg and ahead of Paul Manuell. Youlden maintained position, driving defensively to hold off Manuell until the Holden driver pulled alongside and drove past on the front straight. Youlden then came under pressure from Paul Pedersen and two laps later he too made the same pass down the long front straight. That left the Powerbuilt Falcon in 7th place as the leading six cars raced line astern up ahead.

Near end of the race Manuell and Fogg clashed at the Elbow, gaining Luke two places and allowing him to cross the line in 5th place. After the race he confirmed there was a "power issue" with the Powerbuilt Falcon. "I'm happy with the handling," he said. "It's fast over the back but a bit slow in a straight line and not consistent."

Youlden's 7th and 5th places in the first two races placed him near the back of the field for the 20 - lap reverse grid finale this afternoon.

The Powerbuilt Falcon made steady forward progress during the race, eventually making it through the field into 12th place.

Summing up the weekend Youlden said, "we were down on power and that plagued us all weekend." Referring to the final race he said, "we were trucking through okay until we found the track blocked at the hairpin and we dropped back. When we had clean air and were able to do our own thing the car was quite quick. It was quite frustrating. We will do some solid work on the dyno before the final round to find the problem. We'll have a test day before we go to Pukekohe."

The final round of the championship takes place over the weekend of 21/22 April at Pukekohe Park, south of Auckland. The round will be part of the Placemakers V8 Supercars event and Youlden of Melbourne is looking forward to running on the same programme as the Australian V8 Supercar Series.

Today's racing was held in front of a huge crowd at the Teretonga Park circuit, some estimates putting the figure as high as 20,000 spectators.
