CALTEX DRIVERS CONTINUE STRONG RUN OF FORM

Caltex Racing Ford Falcon V8 drivers Angus Fogg and Paul Pedersen continued their strong run of form on the first day of competition at the fifth round of the Parker ENZED NZ V8s Championship at Feilding's Manfeild Autocourse today.

Caltex Star Mart Falcon driver Fogg qualified third and finished the weekend's first race in third and Caltex Havoline Falcon driver Pedersen qualified sixth but worked his way up to fourth place in the 10 lap race, crossing the finishing line just 0.877 of a second behind his teammate.

The race, held in sweltering conditions under a cloudless sky, was won by fastest qualifier John McIntyre with fellow front-row starter Kayne Scott second, then a gap of just over four seconds to Fogg and Pedersen.

The results for the two Caltex drivers come on the back of their race (Pedersen) and round (Fogg) winning performance at the fourth round of the Parker ENZED at Timaru last month though the heat took it's toll on both cars.

After working his way past both Paul Manuell and Andy Booth and catching up on teammate Fogg, Pedersen had to back off as his Caltex Havoline car's brakes 'started going away.'

"There was plenty of pressure there," said Pedersen, "but they just wouldn't pull the car up. Then the engine started getting hot and I had to ease up."

Fogg found himself in a similar position, though his Caltex Star Mart car's engine didn't get as hot as Pedersen's.

"I thought I could hang on (to McIntyre and Scott)," said Fogg, "and about mid race I thought, well, they're either going to slow down, start making mistakes or take off....and they took off.... so knowing that Paul was behind me and that he wasn't going to do anything stupid the best thing to do in that situation was just to circulate and look after the cars for tomorrow."

There are two more races for the Parker ENZED NZ V8s tomorrow, an 18 lap race in the morning and another (with a reverse top eight starting grid) in the afternoon.
