CALTEX MAN FOGG CLAIMS POPULAR NZ V8S WIN AT PUKEKOHE
Crowd and now championship favourite Angus Fogg (Caltex StarMart Ford Falcon) claimed a popular win in the first of three Parker ENZED NZ V8s Championship races at the Placemakers V8 Supercar meeting at Pukekohe Park this afternoon.
Fastest qualifier and pole-sitter Fogg was the class of the capacity Parker ENZED V8s field on a day of high drama at Pukekohe Park, easing away from fellow front-row starter Kayne Scott after a highly-charged rolling start then pulling away as Scott came under attack from John McIntyre
At the end of the 10 lap race Fogg had an advantage of almost five seconds, with Scott successfully holding McIntyre out for third, and namesakes Mark and Paul Pedersen fourth and fifth respectively.
The win is Fogg's fourth of the 2005/06 season and comes hot on the heels on his fourth pole position, earned in qualifying this morning. To top off what was a perfect day for the Caltex Star Mart Ford Falcon driver at the high-speed 2.841km track, Fogg also set the fastest race lap - and with it, a new category lap record, 1.01.313.
With Scott losing his championship lead to Fogg going into this weekend's final Parker ENZED round due to a testing infringement Fogg went into the race with a 116 point lead.
After the race that lead had extended to 124 points.
Fogg has been one of the fastest drivers but also one of the most consistent points scorers in the Parker ENZED NZ V8s championship this year and after today's race he attributed his form not so much to his Caltex Star Mart Falcon's outright speed but to its drivability.
"If you look at the times," he said, " it's not any faster than it was last year. It might have been fractionally faster in qualifying but really there's nothing in it and the times in the races are very similar. The big difference is that it is more consistent and it is that consistency that we've been working on because obviously if you can do a good lap time and do it one lap after another then you are going to be in a stronger position than if you can do a really quick lap but only do it once."
Teammate Paul Pedersen also expressed himself happy with his Caltex Havoline-backed Ford Falcon, qualifying and finishing fifth in today's race.
That said, the former class and New Zealand TranZam champion said that he was a little bit too tentative in the race and that if it had been 18 rather than 10 laps long he would have been able to get past namesake Mark Pedersen then work on bridging the gap to the duelling Scott/McIntyre duo.
"I lost too much ground in the rolling start then I got tagged by somebody, " he said. "On the positive side, it was good to get the first race out of the way. It's a big weekend, it's been a big year and we've still got two more races to think about tomorrow."
Sunday's programme kicks off with one 18-lap race at 1.30pm and the season finale at 3.35pm.
