Olivier Comeau wins in Mont-Tremblant

Sherbrooke, September 27, 2004 -- Over twenty Formula 1600 drivers converged on Mont-Tremblant last weekend for their last meeting of the season, this only three weeks after the hard fought round at the Montreal Molson Indy. For Sherbrooke's driver and 2003 Champion Olivier Comeau, this was a crucial weekend. He did what he is best at: winning.

To maximize his chances on a track he knows well, Olivier took the difficult step of thanking JLM Autosport for their services, who he was racing for earlier this season, and rest on the experience of the Britain West team, under the direction of David Clubine.

Olivier explains: "We've been really disappointed by the results this season. I've only been able to finish two races all season because of frequent mechanical woes. I've been hard on myself at the Molson Indy, blaming my DNF on a driving error. The car was really instable and I had to push to the limit all the way around the track just to keep from dropping out of the front runners. The team couldn't deliver cutting edge equipment despite their efforts, so I knew I had to make a move. My choice naturally went to Britain West, a strong team I already knew well and with whom I had developed some ties early this season."

This choice proved beneficial for the 20 year-old driver who captured the honors of the first race on Saturday, beating all the race winners from the early rounds of the Championship. Now with a competitive car, Olivier expressed his talent with poise and rivalled with the top drivers in the field.

As early as the time trials of Thursday and Friday, Olivier was already displaying the full extent of his talents, scoring impressing lap times. Comeau was scoring reference times at almost every lap, this despite having to get acquainted with a new car.

"With a well prepared car, it really helped me build my confidence back and it reminded me of 2003 with Key Motorsport. Every lap I was lowering my times and the car would hold up. I knew right there on Thursday that I could contend for the win."

After being held up by backmarkers during his qualifying run, Olivier started from the sixth spot on the grid. With patience and determination, the Sherbrooke driver climbed to the top spot, finally recording his first win of the season.

The second race of the weekend did not unfold as planned for Olivier, who spun from the third position while pushing for the lead.

Olivier comments: "For me, this race was not as crucial as the first one since I already proved I was still competitive and one of the fastest drivers in the field. Furthermore, I wasn't a contender for the Championship. Since I already had a win in the first race, I allowed myself to test the limits of my new car to better understand its performance. Unfortunately, I pushed a little too hard and spun in corner 7. I still came back after a pit stop and registered several fast laps at the end of the race."

"I'm statisfied with the way the season ended. I wish to thank my sponsors, Busch Beer and their Sherbrooke agent Marc Longpre, Relais Pneus et Mecanique of Sherbrooke and owner Yvan Desgreniers and also Via Route of Sherbrooke and its president Dany Sevigny. I also would like to give special thanks to Gilles Beaucage and the Beaucage Group, a new sponsor for this weekend without whom I wouldn't be here in Tremblant for this race. Without the support of all of them, this season couldn't have happened."

"I also thank Pierre Vallee, optometrist and Luc Morrisette of the PPD Group who gave me a good push at the beginning of the seaso n."
