Australian Sports Sedan Championship Round Two Race One Oran Park June 15-16

Ricciardello survives to take heat one.

Defending Australian Sports Sedan Champion went a little ways in getting his title aspirations back on track by taking the first of three Domaine Homes-backed heats at Oran Park today.

Driving his Alfa-powered Chev, Ricciardello was beaten away from the start line by fastest qualifier Kerry Baily, but shortly after found a way past the similarly engined Nissan 300ZX to take the lead. For several laps the pair diced until a touch between the pair caused Baily to retire with a tyre puncture.

Ricciardello was then clear of Darren Hossack's Saab/Chev for the duration but still looked anything but confident as he lost third gear on lap seven, and fifth with one lap to go. He crossed the line 4.2 seconds in front of Hossack with another 2.9 seconds to New Zealander Andrew Fawcett.

It was a remarkable drive for the Kiwi in his TRANZAM-spec Jaguar. After starting from tenth position, he closely pursued the dice for third involving Terry Shiel's Mazda/Nissan Turbo and the Saab/Chev of Dean Randle, claiming the podium spot when the two collided.

After a two-year layoff Des Wall's Supra/Chev ran well to be finish fourth just ahead of Tony Wilson's Chev-engined Commodore after the pair ran nose-to-tail for the duration. Behind sixth-placed Glenn Taylor in another Commodore/Chev was Daniel Jameson who was forced to start from the pit lane after a high temperature reading was reported from a faulty sensor in his Jaguar.

Attrition was also up with suspension failure for Mark Stinson's Calibra/Chev, and another gearbox failure for the Escort/Chev of Mick Monterosso when prominently placed. Queenslander Jeff Barnes failed to make a getaway because of battery failure on the start line.
