AMERICAN PAUL EDWARDS ADVANCES IN THE EUROSERIES CHAMPIONSHIP

Bouncing off his last race victory at Nurburgring, Germany, American Paul Edwards felt confident of a strong performance at this weekend's Formula Euroseries event at Mondello Park, Ireland. Although the practice times on Friday were very close, at the end of the day, Paul ended up with the quickest lap time.

The weather has been very changeable and the Saturday morning qualifying session would be run on a wet track. Takumo Sato ended up with a very good wet track set up and won pole position. Tomas Scheckter, currently leading the championship, took the second position, a mere 8 hundredths ahead of Paul Edwards. Darren Malkin, second in the championship, will start 7th and Carlos Domingos will start in the 12th position.

The first race of the weekend was scheduled to start at 4 pm. The track was dry and the drivers took their starting positions. The leaders had a good start, and Paul soon gained the position from Scheckter and was working on Sato. Sato was braking early going into the corners and Paul at one point went off the track to avoid running into Sato's back end, but Paul was able to recover but unable to gain the lead. Soon it started to rain and the teams were called in to change to wet tyres. They again had a good restart and things seemed to be going well until there was a tangle between several drivers and the pace car came out. At the end of the race, and after several other minor mishaps, the top positions remained unchanged - Sato winning the race, Paul Edwards coming in second and Tomas Scheckter finishing in third. Darren Malkin had advanced to the 4th finish position, but Carlos Domingos did not finish the race.

Paul Edwards has now advanced to third place in the championship standings with Tomas Scheckter in the lead and Darren Malkin in second.

Tomorrow will again have morning qualifying with the race being in the afternoon about 4pm.
