Trans Tasman Trophy injection for Sports Sedans.

There will be much more at stake this weekend when the Australian Sports Sedan Championship travels to Phillip Island in Victoria for round two. It will also be the opening round of the Trans Tasman Trophy, a five-round series where Aussie Sports Sedans take on Tranzam cars from New Zealand.

Kiwis Kayne Scott, Bernie Gillon and John McIntyre have arrived in Australia eager to get off on a winning note with their US-inspired Chev Corvettes and Ford Mustang.

Kerry Baily, Tony Ricciardello, Darren Hossack, Dean Randle, Graham Smith and the like are battling for second round honours in the Australian Sports Sedan Championship as well as having contend with the visitors.

The first three Trans Tasman Trophy rounds will be encompassed within the ASSC with the New Zealanders ineligible for points in our domestic series. After Phillip Island, further rounds will take place at Winton, and the Melbourne 500 meeting at Sandown.

The final two rounds will be in New Zealand, one of which is at the Pukohe and the other closely scheduled to that event, but yet to be advised.

Tranzam cars are very different from Sports Sedans but similar in performance and lap times. Unlike their US counterparts, the Tranzam cars have the option to run a six-litre V8 instead of the category normal five-litre engine, although it comes with added weight penalty of 50 kgs over the minimum 1210 kgs.

Tranzam cars with carburettors have around 670 horsepower for the five-litre engine and 720 (six litre) while the Australian cars are around the 660. But the latter category mostly has fuel injection, and a weight advantage of approximately 85 kgs.

The diversity of the two Trans Tasman Trophy categories has basically come up with the same result. Both are lapping race circuits in their respective countries faster than V8 Supercars.

In the meantime defending Australian Sports Sedan Champion Tony Ricciardello will be hopeful of turning around his first round disaster where his Alfa/Chev failed to score any points.

Darren Hossack, second in last years championship, was also off to a forgetful 2003 title assault with his Saab/Alfa also failing to score any points.

After a couple of lean years in the luck stakes, Kerry Baily had two wins and a second at that meeting and will be keen to consolidate a handy lead after two rounds.

Graham Smith came away with a heat win in his Fiat Turbo-powered Opel Calibra and finished second overall in round one. He has now found renewed commitment to this year's title but is expecting strong challengers this weekend from Dean Randle's Saab/Chev, the Toyota Supra/Chev of Des Wall and Phil Crompton's Ford Falcon
