Pierre Kaffer extends points' lead with win number two
Stuttgart. With a green light to chequered flag victory pole-sitter Pierre Kaffer claimed the second round of the Porsche Michelin Supercup on the Circuito de Catalunya close to Barcelona, Spain. Whilst Kaffer, who had already won the season-opening round at Imola two weeks ago, drove to a clear victory, his team mate in the Infineon Farnbacher squad, Frank Stippler (Germany) had to defend his second place from the ninth lap to the finish from Wolf Henzler's hefty attacks. Stippler brought his 911 home second four-tenths of a second ahead of his German compatriot.
Starting from fifth on the grid, Henzler at first outsprinted Walter Lechner jr on the way to the first corner, then overtook Klaus Graf after a fierce duel before setting his sights on Stippler.
Behind Klaus Graf Italy's Luca Riccitelli saw the chequered flag in fifth position, in front of Australia's Alexander Davison and Walter Lechner jr. Lechner jr. stated that he had pushed his car too hard and was slowed by tyre wear.
Alessandro Zampedri, who finished the race second in 2002, secured eighth after taking up the sprint from sixth on the grid, whilst his Dewalt Racing PZRO-JAM team mate Patrick Huisman (Netherlands) lost a lap after a collision with Luca Riccitelli in lap seven.
With his second win Pierre Kaffer extends his lead in the drivers' standings, whilst Luca Riccitelli sits ten point in arrears in second ahead of Wolf Henzler and Walter Lechner jr.
Pierre Kaffer (winner):
"I'm extremely satisfied. I think I was the only driver of the top group who didn't use the second set of tyres in the qualifying yesterday. With new rubber I could pull away from the rest of the field in the opening phase and then just maintain my speed."
Frank Stippler (second):
"Second is better than ending in the gravel. This was one of the toughest fights I've ever had trying to keep Wolf behind me. Our set-up turned out to be too aggressive for the tyres, and they deteriorated faster than I had expected."
Wolf Henzler (third):
"Right up to the seventh lap Klaus Graf and I had a fantastic fight for the third place. Our cars touched a few times, once at the end of the finish straight where we are really quick. Then I managed to overtake Klaus and attack Frank. In the final stage Klaus came very close again so I was kept busy putting Frank under pressure and defending my rear. I was relieved to see the flag." <pre> Race Result: 1. Pierre Kaffer (Germany) Infineon Team Farnbacher PZM 14 laps in 26. 37.239min 2.
