Montreal, April 19 - Canada's Formula Ford racers will once again make a welcome appearance at the Air Canada Grand Prix, June 8-10, 2001, as the Canadian Formula Ford Championship, presented by A. N. Deringer, returns to Le Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve.

"The F1600 race is always a great show and an important part of our Formula 1 event," said Normand Legault, President of Grand Prix F1 du Canada, Inc. "Our fans have long enjoyed the thrills and excitement this race has provided, as our next generation of Canadian drivers emerge from this close and competitive series."

"We are very pleased to be back at the Air Canada Grand Prix," said David Berman, President of BMG, the series organizer. "Canadian teams and drivers have much to be thankful for. The generous support of Grand Prix F1 du Canada, Inc. helps ensure the continued development of so many young and talented Canadian drivers. Over the past many years, M. Legault's personal efforts have been a major factor in sustaining a strong Canadian racing program."

Grand Prix officials announced that the prize fund for the Formula Ford race is expected to reach $24,000. Last year's winner, Jonathan Macri, took home $8,000 for his dramatic victory after dominating the race. Jonathan and his brother, Francis, finished 1-2 in the race, the first time such a feat has been accomplished by two brothers. The popular two-time series champion, Didier Schraenen, finished third. Jonathan Macri went on to win the championship and is competing in the 2001 Toyota Atlantic Series.

Other past graduates of the Canadian Formula Ford series who have moved up this racing ladder include CART drivers Alexandre Tagliani and Paul Tracy. Other notable Canadian graduates include Anthony Simone and Stephan C. Roy, racing in Formula Atlantic, and Marc-Antoine Camirand and Billy Asaro, racing in F2000.

An international formula, F1600 is the established training ground for future international driving champions. The Canadian Formula Ford Championship Series is one of many F1600 national championships operating around the world. Sanctioned by ASN Canada FIA, the series begins its 12th consecutive season in May.

The series is sponsored by Ford of Canada, A. N. Deringer, Hankook, Shields, Cardinal and Auto Sport Basi. For more information on the Canadian Formula Ford Series, presented by Deringer, visit www.formulaford1600.com.
