The DuQuoin Magic Mile
If you remember in the last report about Springfield I talked about how hot it was. Well, Springfield was nothing compared to the weather at The DuQuoin Magic Mile. It was oppressively hot. At nine-o-clock in the morning it was eighty degrees and climbing.
The track was in pretty poor shape for practice. They had worked water into the track all night which caused the track to be extremely slick for most of the practice time. Also we had developed a bad miss in the engine during practice. We tried changing ignition boxes and carburetors during practice and could not get rid of the miss.
Qualifying time came around and as we were going through the tech line they (ARCA) were sniffing the air inside of the tires and told me that after qualifying we would be impounded because their sensor had indicated we had something inside of the left front tire. To say the least, I was livid. Even though I knew that we did not have anything inside of the tire the implication was there that I was cheating. After our qualifying run in which we placed eleventh we came in and turned the left front tire over to an ARCA official. They had it broken down and of course they did not find anything in our tire or in the tires of the fourteen other cars they impounded. Thats right, they impounded fifteen cars and not one was found with anything. I think it is time for ARCA to invest in a new sensor.
The race was your typical DuQuion. We started eleventh, moved up to ninth until around lap thirty. We did our mandatory pit-stop then and took on fuel and cleaned the windshield. Eric went back out and continued to move back up through the field. Around lap eighty Eric radioed in that the water temperature was at 240 degrees. We were not pushing any water out so I told him to keep going. At lap ninety the last of seven cautions came out. This was a savior for us. It gave us time to cool the engine down. The green came back out on lap 93 and we were able to finish the race for a sixth place finish.
I want to thank all the crew members that endured the extreme heat to help the team make a good showing. Our next race is at the super high banked one-half mile track in Salem,Indiana. The Southtown Thunder hopes to see you there...
It will also be fun to hear from Mike B. About his RIDE at DuQuoin.
