- NASCAR racer Lee Roy Yarbrough dies of natural causes (1984).

December 8 - George Snider born (1940).

December 9 - Daniel MacKinlay Jr., driving a Spyker, and L. de Dantos, driving a Daracq, finish in a dead-heat in the first documented auto compitition in Argentina, a trial from Buenos Aires to Tigre (1906).

December 10 - Sportscar racer Price Cobb born (1954).

- Having not raced since August due to a wrist injury, Rick Mears announces his retirement from racing (1992).

December 11 - Ferdinand Porsche born (1935).

- Joseph R. Cloutier, president of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, dies (1989).

December 12 - F1 and Indycar great Emerson Fittipaldi born in Sao Paulo, Brazil (1946).

- Bruce McLaren drives his Cooper-Climax to victory at the first USGP, at Sebring, Florida. His teammate, Jack Brabham, clinches the World Grand Prix driving title with his fourth place finish. Field includes Porsche RSK and Kurtis-Offy sprintcar (1959).
