September 21 - Mark Donohue, driving a Chevrolet Camaro, beats Parnelli Jones, driving a Ford Mustang, by 2.17 seconds to win the Sears Point 200 Trans-Am race at Sears Point, Caliornia. The win clinches Chevy's second straight Trans-Am title. After spraying the crowd in victory circle with champagne, Donohue picked up a garden hose and continued his celebration. His team owner, Roger Penske, locked himself in a street car with the windows rolled up to escape the antics (1969).
September 22 - Denny Hulme and Bruce McLaren, both driving Ford powered McLaren M7A racers, finish 1-2 in the Canadian Grand Prix at St. Jovite (1968).
September 23 - Gordon Johncock wins the USAC Champioanship race at Trenton, New Jersey, in an Eagle-Offenhauser (1973).
September 24 - Pre-war driving ace Eddie Rickenbacker is named commanding officer of the US "Hat in the Ring" airplane fighter squadren during World War I (1918).
September 25 - Johnnie Parsons drives a Kurtis-Offenhauser to victory in the AAA sanctioned race on the dirt track at Springfield, Illinois (1949).
September 26 - Denny Hulme drives a Chevy powered McLaren M8F to victory in the Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Can-Am race (1971).
September 27 - Parnelli Jones wins the USAC Championship race at Trenton, New Jersey, driving a Lotus-Ford (1964).
