September 28 - Team McLaren drivers Bruce McLaren and Denny Hulme finish 1-2 in the only Can-Am event ever held at Michigan International Speedway (1969).

September 29 - Pat O'Conner wins the USAC Championship race at Trenton, New Jersey, in a Kuzma-Offenhauser (1957).

September 30 - Actor James Dean, driving his new Porsche 550 Spyder, is killed in a road accident on his way to participate in what would have been his fourth sportscar race (1955).

October 1 - Ernie Ervan returns to racing, 14 months after a serious accident, at North Wilksboro, North Carolina (1995).

October 2 - Frank Griswald drives an Alfa Romeo to victory in the first race through the streets of Watkins Glen, New York. First race staged by fledgling Sports Car Club of America (1948).

October 3 - Graham Hill and BRM both win their third consecutive USGP at Watkins Glen, New York (1965).

October 4 - Richard Noble drives Thrust 2 to a one-mile Land Speed Record of 633.47 MPH (1983).
