2ND PLACE PODIUM FOR TUDOR-SPONSORED KONRAD MOTORSPORT'S PATRICK HUISMAN IN ROUND 3, BARCELONA
The third round of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup's season took place today as part of the support race line-up for the 2010 Formula 1™ World Championship.
Twenty-four competitors were on the start line for the 14-lap race; among them, 43-year old Patrick Huisman, easy-to-follow on the Barcelona track in the TUDOR car nr21. Huisman (Konrad Motorsport) jumped from a starting position in 5th to 4th position and then finished in 3rd on the podium. However, with race winner Sean Edwards receiving a penalty of 25 seconds for an accident during the race, Huisman then moved up to place 2nd in the rankings, behind Austrian winner Norbert Siedler (Veltins MRS Racing) and ahead of Jeroen Bleekemolen in 3rd.
Bleekemolen had qualified in pole with 1:50.102, giving Al Faisal Lechner Racing its very first pole position of the season. Huisman was able to bring Konrad Motorsport their first points of the season with his podium finish, and even Siedler could celebrate his first win of the season: a Spanish weekend of firsts!
In qualifying, Dutchman Bleekemolen managed to edge out Britain's Edwards by a mere 0.302 seconds to finish in front, putting Edwards in the second spot on the starting grid. Austria's Siedler completed the technical track with a best time of 1:50.663, giving him an advantageous start in 3rd on the starting grid.
Sean Edwards sped across the finish line to claim the fastest race time and the initial win, although was later disqualified because of an accident and penalized with 25 seconds, leaving him 12th in final rankings for this round of Championship. The Abu Dhabi by tolimit driver stated, "The guys on the team are new and did a fantastic job setting up the car. We have made some great progress since the start of the season and I hope to repeat our good efforts in Monaco's race."
Before final results were announced Siedler said, "Second place is an incredibly happy end in this race. Yesterday I thought that third place in qualifying was a great position to be in for the start of the race. In my fastest lap in qualifying I was held up slightly, otherwise perhaps it would have been a good enough performance for the 1st row of the starting grid. In the end, my good starting position was converted into a strong podium finish- great news for the team!"
Following his successful free practice session, Patrick Huisman stood a good chance to finish on the podium for the 3rd round as he lined up 5th on the grid- that podium finish proved to be a reality. "What a fantastic race. I had a good start. I was careful watching Siedler- in my opinion he was taking a lot of risks so I backed off. I thought they would be slower much earlier in the race but I got it wrong. Everyone used their tires very well and pulled out gaps. My race became consistent. I had good fun and was very relaxed. I knew already from the 2nd lap that I would have a strong race. Now I want to get back home to see my six-week old boy Heyden and then I will be off to Monaco, one of my favorite tracks. See you there!"
Not including the points earned in this 3rd Round, the Championship's overall standings see German driver Rene Rast leading with 44 points, followed by Stefan Rosina with 32 points and Jeroen Bleekemolen in 3rd Overall with 30 points.
