STEERING PROBLEM MAKES LIFE DIFFICULT FOR HERRON AT ROCKINGHAM

For ELF Renault Clio Cup front-runner Andrew Herron round 17 and 18 qualifying at Rockingham International Super Sports Car Circuit this afternoon, Saturday, 19th September, was a case of what might have been when a bolt failure on his steering cost him the chance to battle for pole position.

The problem became apparent as the 21-year-old Northern Irishman took to the Northamptonshire track for his first lap of the session and although costing him a huge amount of time, through the long first sector particularly, he still managed to post a best lap of 1m 30.565 seconds (77.11mph) -- less than two 10ths of a second shy of the front row.

Qualifying for the first of the weekend's races eighth on the grid, Andrew was later promoted into seventh place when second fastest qualifier Dave Newsham had all of his lap times deleted as a result of an exclusion. For round 18, Dromore-based Andrew will start from seventh position again thanks to his second best lap time of 1m30.575 seconds.

Working miracles to lap so closely to the outright pace, even with such a major handicap to his JHR Developments run car, Andrew certainly minimised the damage to his hopes of challenging for the Vice-Champion's spot in the championship. Heading into tomorrow's pair of races, he's confident his pace will be good enough to fight his way through towards the podium.

"I did the best job I could today, to end up just three 10ths of a second away from pole position with damaged steering wasn't bad at all", commented the Brian Herron Contracts-backed driver, "It's really disappointing the bolt failed as the amount of time we lost through that would have easily been enough to move me onto the front row. With everything repaired, tomorrow we should be fast."

Round 17 of the 2009 ELF Renault Clio Cup will get underway at 10.00 tomorrow morning, Sunday, 20th September, with round 18 following at around 15.15. The second of the two races will be screened live across the UK on Freeview, digital satellite and cable channel ITV4 -- check listings for details.
