CHAMPIONSHIP newcomer Warren Luff had never driven his Holden Commodore SS ute before yesterday, but today he took the lead in the 2002 V8 BRute Muster Series at the first round on Adelaide's Parklands street circuit.

After topping qualifying yesterday, Luff scored a convincing win in race one from fellow Holden drivers Gary MacDonald and James Brock.

MacDonald and Brock both beat Luff, who started third after a draw for grid positions, into the first corner but the young Sydney driving instructor was on a charge and took the lead on lap four in a late braking plunge at the end of Brabham Straight.

The starting grid was reversed for the second six-lap race. Luff and teammate Mick Donaher started from near the back of the field but were impressive in working their way through to fourth and fifth respectively at the finish.

Race two was won Grant Denyer (Falcon), who led comfortably from the start in his Falcon. Charlie Kovacs (Commodore) survived heavy pressure from Damien White (Falcon) to keep second spot at the flag.

The V8 BRutes race again tomorrow.
