Mixed fortunes for Coopers Team at opener.

After what looked to be a solid podium position, or possibly a win for the defending Poolrite V8 BRutes champion Warren Luff was negated by a start line infringement, his team mate Chris Smerdon fought through for a strong second in heat one.

Luff had started in fourth position, and next to no time, was second and pressing the leader Gary Baxter in his Holden. But he had to relent his strong position with a drive-through penalty down pit lane.

The green Coopers Pale Ale Ford Falcon AU XR8 rejoined the race in the midfield and finished 11th. "I don't know if I could have nailed that Commodore for it had more pace than me. I could make up the leeway under brakes but really I was never in a position to be close enough to try an out-braking move," Luff said later.

Smerdon was very happy with his car. "The Coopers Pale Ale Holden Commodore VU SS has gone the best that it ever has," he said. Third on the final lap, Smerdon was able to passed the vastly experienced Allan Grice on the last lap to claim second.

The team's third car, the red Cooper Sparkling Ale Ford Falcon of Grant Park experienced brake problems throughout the race but was still able to improve to 12th from his 14th starting position.

Park had the pole for the second event and had the lead when the race was red flagged when Commodore driver Gavin Harvey crashed on lap three.

Luff had started from 14th and after a first lap clash with Harvey improved to seventh by the race stoppage. Smerdon who didn't get away as well as he would have liked, continued in tandem with Luff shortly from shortly after the start.
