That was true but at the last control Liatti deliberately (under team orders) penalized 10 seconds and gave the win to McRae. Check: http://www.rosenet.it/sanremorally/press/free/033cs.htm
So, the revised results are: Rank Num Crew Car GC Time Delay AbsGrpCls 1 1 1 3 MCRAE C. /GRIST N. Impreza 555 WRC A6 4:08'25 0'00 2 2 2 4 LIATTI P. /PONS F. Subaru Impreza A6 4:08'31 0'06
I think everything else stayed the same. The final results can be checked at: http://www.planio.it/federkronos/risultati/rally/sanremo97/CIUA320.HTM
The positions on the championships are: Last San Now Gap Rally Remo 1 Makinen 52 + 4 = 56 2 Sainz 44 + 3 = 47 9 3 McRae 32 + 10= 42 14
4? Liatti 18 + 6 = 24 32 5? Kankkunen 22 + 1 = 23 33
1 Subaru 78 + 16= 94 2 Ford 77 + 4 = 81 17 3 Mitsubishi 69 + 4 = 73 21
Any one of Makinen, Sainz and McRae might still win, but it will be difficult for anyone to beat Makinen. If Makinen finishes in front of Sainz at the next rally, Sainz is beaten. To beat McRae Makinen needs only a 2nd place in either of the next 2 rallys, even if McRae wins both. (I am assuming that in case of a tie Makinen wins, but I am not sure. How many wins have each driver ? I know this was McRae's 3rd victory this year.
For the constructors championship it is much the same. Any team might still win, but it will be hard to beat Subaru.
