Dreyer Set To Take Dark Dog Superbike Title At Zwartkops

Cape Town rider Greg Dreyer, from the Autopage Cellular Honda stable, looks set to wrap up this year's Dark Dog Superbike Championship at Zwartkops on Saturday.

Dreyer needs just two points - or a single fifth place in the two heats - to make sure of the title. The Capetonian's team-mate, experienced Zimbabwean Robbie Petersen, is also in a position to take a tight grip on second place in the championship, with Zwartkops providing competitors with a few challenges.

It is the first time the Dark Dog brigade will be racing at Zwartkops since the opening of the revamped Pretoria West circuit. Competitors will also be racing on consecutive weekends - following hard on the heels of this weekend's outing at Aldo Scribante in Port Elizabeth - and that is going to place a strain on riders and technical crew.

In stark contrast to previous seasons when strong championship challenges have been hurt by a tendency to crash, Dreyer this season has been a model of consistency. It has paid off for the Capetonian and a fourth and a third at Scribante, have set up a situation where clinching the title looks to be a mere formality.

Petersen's brace of wins in Port Elizabeth have also put him in a strong position to take the runner-up berth. His closest rivals are 12 time SA motorcycle champion Russell Wood (Vodacom Nashua Yamaha) and fellow KwaZulu-Natalian Trevor Crookes on the UUNet Ducati.

On present form Petersen and Crookes look to be the best bets. While Wood and his Vodacom Nashua Yamaha team-mates, Lance Isaacs and Arushen Moodley, have not had a happy time of it over the latter part of the season, Petersen and Crookes have come on strongly.

Crookes, in particular, is a dangerman. Although threatening to win every time he climbs onto the Ducati, former SA champion Crookes has only one win to his credit this season - and would like nothing better than to steal some of the thunder from Dreyer.

There will also be a great deal of interest in young KwaZulu-Natal rider Hudson Kennaugh on a privately entered Suzuki. Kennaugh has produced some scintillating late season form, and along with the likes of privateers championship leader Noel Haarhof (Wayne Heasman Racing Suzuki) and Shaun Whyte (Silver Arrow Suzuki) could make like a little difficult for the factory entrants.
