An Afternoon Cruise Interrupted
By Bill King
Elliott Forbes-Robinson was rolling The Boss Snowplow No. 4 Howard-Boss Motorsports Pontiac Crawford along comfortably in fifth place, clicking off conservative 1:53 laps and fiddling with the mapping.
Coming past the pits at Lap 85, Luis Diaz lost several crucial components at the rear of his No. 01 Lexus Riley spreading shards of the outer skin all through Daytona's tri-oval. Diaz thought something in the rear had seized sending the car into a spin, blowing out the right rear and disintegrating first the rear bodywork and then the nose section.
EFR dove straight into the pits, avoiding the debris, and took on four tires and fuel in a rapid 37.377sec.
Following the restart on Lap 97, Howard-Boss teammates No. 20 and No. 4, EFR still up, were sitting first and third. Shortly afterward, EFR began reporting the patched-together No. 01 was puking oil. By Lap 102, Elliott was beginning to get his knickers in a twist over the oil spray he was riding through. Nonetheless, a lap later, he moved the car into second place behind teammate Jan Lammers in the No. 20.
The next scheduled pit stops will see NASCAR stars Jimmie Johnson replacing EFR in the No. 4 and Tony Stewart saddling up the No. 20.
