There is no Substitute For Track Time for Spirit of Daytona Racing
BIRMINGHAM, Ala., 17 July -- Racecars are not unlike wild horses -- powerful beasts waiting to be tamed. For the Spirit of Daytona Racing crew it isn't a horse, but rather a coyote -- a Daytona Prototype Porsche V8 powered Coyote, to be exact, that they have been methodically taming.
With the Rolex Sports Car Series hitting a hot summer stride, Spirit of Daytona Racing will look to keep that development curve moving up this weekend in the Porsche 250 presented by Bradly Arant with drivers Guy Cosmo and Marc-Antoine Camirand sharing the No. 09 Porsche V8-powered Coyote at Barber Motorsports Park.
The motor-chassis combination is the only such entry in the field, which will see the Daytona Prototypes mixing it up among the large GT class field entered for the two hour and forty-five minute sprint event.
For a rapidly accelerating motor-chassis program like the V8-Porsche Coyote, there is no substitute for competitive track time, and as the results are showing -- the more the better. Since scoring the highest finish of any Porsche-powered Daytona Prototype machine in the class at the Rolex 24, the car has impressed with both reliability and speed, and the team is looking for both once again this weekend.
"When you are starting to make strides in your program, it's really important to just keep your foot in it, so it's great that we have the chance to keep our momentum up here at Barber and then in Montreal," said team owner Troy Flis, who recently returned from the Goodwood Festival of Speed. "The more track time we can get, the better and both these next two races will give us a chance to be competitive and also provide the right environments to test our progress."
Capable of being fast over a single-lap as they have demonstrated in qualifying at the Homestead, Watkins Glen and Mid-Ohio races earlier this season, the No. 09 car crew is focusing improving consistency over longer runs. Over the last three races, the team has run in or near the Top-10 consistently, needing only to extract the last few ounces of speed to solidly contend within it.
"We're learning and improving on different areas every time we get on track," says Cosmo. "Aero and cockpit cooling are two areas were we've advanced so hopefully both will benefit us here this weekend at Barber. We've run well with this car, but we haven't been able to close out a race in a strong enough position to show what this package is capable of. But hopefully we can put all this downforce to good use this weekend and come out of here with a strong result."
