TAFEL RACING QUALIFIES ON THE POLE AT BARBER
BIRMINGHAM, Al.- For the fourth time this season, Tafel Racing has qualified one of its cars in top position. The 73 Tafel Racing NEC Porsche GT3 Cup qualified first in GT with a lap time of 1:31.775 on the 2.38 mile, 16 turn course at Barber Motorsports Park.
Qualifying driver Andrew Davis of Bogart, Ga. has a bit of a home field advantage at Barber, having been a lead instructor for the Porsche Driving Experience there since the track opened in 2003. Davis has not only driven the circuit innumerable times, but taught others to drive it as well. "This really just shows what the Tafel team is capable of. We went through a lot of setup changes to get just what we needed after practice so the crew was working right up until qualifying to make the car as good as we could get it and it looks like we got it right," said Davis.
Davis's co-driver in the Porsche 250 presented by Bradley Arant will be team owner Jim Tafel, who was excited for his friend's accomplishment and what it will mean for their performance in the race. "Andrew is a great driver and a great instructor," said Tafel after qualifying. "This is just a great achievement for him and for our team. He has taught me a lot about this circuit, which I hope to use to maintain a high position when I get in the car."
The 74 Tafel Racing Rembrandt Charms Porsche GT3 Cup qualified 6th with Eric Lux of Buffalo, NY at the wheel. Lux had hours earlier qualified 2nd in the Grand Am Cup Series in the 175 Tafel Racing Charms Porsche 996.
The 72 Tafel Racing NEC Porsche GT3 Cup was unable to go out for the qualifying session because a replacement engine had not yet arrived. The crew has made the engine change, however, and will have a practice session before the race to make final preparations. Grand Am rules will have the 72 car starting from the back of the field, but drivers Wolf Henzler of Germany and Robin Liddell of Scotland are both experienced drivers and have the skills to navigate their way through traffic in the 44 car field and work their way up to a platform finish.
