PORSCHE-POWERED RACER LEADS AT SIX HOUR MARK AT THE CLASSIC ROLEX 24 AT DAYTONA INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- January 26, 2008 -- The Rolex 24 at Daytona International Speedway started under overcast skies with the promise of tough battle for Porsche in both classes of the Grand-Am series season opener. But at the six hour mark, the Ruby Tuesday Porsche-powered Crawford of Alex Job Racing held a lead of more than 35 seconds over the second place competitor, and a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup racer entered by Farnbacher Loles Motorsports leads the GT class by 14 seconds.
Driven by the team of Patrick Long, Joey Hand, Andy Wallace and Bill Auberlin, the Ruby Tuesday sponsored car flirted with the top 10 up until the fifth hour. But after a heavy, prolonged shower and the resultant mad dash to the pits for wet tires, the Tavares, Florida-based car, driven at that point by Hand, found itself on top of the charts.
"In a field that sports several true champions from NASCAR, IndyCar, Formula 1, this is quite promising," said Paul Ritchie, President of Porsche Motorsport North America. "But it is only hour six of a 24 hour race, so anything can still happen."
In the GT class, the quarter mark found the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car of Farnbacher Loles Motorsports, driven by the team of Wolf Henzler, Eric Lux, Leh Keen, Saacha Maassen and Joerg Bergmeister led the enormous GT field. For Porsche Motorsport North America, the pride of running a Porsche combined with the Daytona 24 Hour tradition gives this event special meaning for both the manufacturer and every Porsche team.
Porsches have won the Florida classic overall 20 times, the most recent victory being scored by The Racer's Group Porsche 911 GT3 RSR in 2003. Porsche competitors have scored 61 class wins -- dozens more than the nearest competitor -- and 36 of those wins have been in 911-based race cars.
