Risi Competizione had mixed results during the third quarter of the Rolex 24 at Daytona. Ralf Kelleners returned to the No. 35 Ferrari 360 Modena GT at 12h20, held third place in the GT class and moved up to fourth place overall. Anthony Lazzaro took over driving duty at 14h50, followed by Johnny Mowlem an hour later. Mowlem lost a position when he had to pit for a new tailpipe after 16 hours.
"It's tough, it's like qualifying," Kelleners said of the intense race. "It's full throttle.."
"It's the most fun I can remember having in ages driving," Mowlem enthused of an early driving shift. "It's fantastic. I could have driven this car for four or five hours, it's just so easy with the paddle shift and the way the car handles under braking. It's so much fun! It was nice getting a lap back on the Papis/Collard [Ferrari] car, then it was nice being able to edge away from [CART Championship Series driver Max] Papis, as well. I said on the radio, 'Does that mean I get a Champ Car drive?' The answer was, 'Probably not'."
The No. 34 Ferri Competizione Ferrari and Ryan Hampton returned to action just before the 13-hour mark after two long pitstops to replace the starter and repair the voltage regulator. Mauro Baldi started a triple stint at 14h50 and posted the car's fastest lap of the race (one minute 54.9 seconds) at the end of the three-hour stint. Justin Keen took over at 17h50.
"It's colder than I thought it would be!" Keen said of his first 24-hour race. "And it's quite a test of endurance, probably a bit more than I thought it would be. The first two stints were quite easy but it was also quite easy to go to sleep after that. We were fifth overall, but we lost a lot of time and we're 'way down, so now we've got to do something special and that's what Mauro's doing."
fit to race
Risi Competizione is committed to maximizing team performance, with healthy meals delivered to pit lane, two massage therapists for the drivers and crew, a quadruple helmet dryer for driver comfort and even toothbrushes delivered to the pit crew at 6 am.
"Motor racing has come a long way," team manager Dave Sims explained. "It used to be the drivers just turned up for the race and struggled through cold coca-colas. Now it's all health drinks, massage, physios and all the equipment like a first-division football team. Even the crew are affected - we feed them pasta now, more healthy food, and try to get them to exercise."
