SunTrust Pontiac Riley Rolex 24 At Daytona Update #1

Daytona Beach, Florida (January 28, 2006) -- Leave it to Max "The Ax" Angelelli to slice and dice his way to the front of the Rolex 24 At Daytona field in no time at all. With just over 50 laps completed, Angelelli pushed the No. 10 SunTrust Pontiac Riley as high as 2nd place from its 27th-position start.

"My first stint was very good," exclaimed Angelelli, co-winner of the 2005 Rolex Series Daytona Prototype Driver and Team championships with teammate Wayne Taylor. "I just went out and tried to be fast and smart."

After the race's start, Angelelli surged into 16th place by lap ten, and when the first caution flag of the race emerged on lap on lap 19 (the result of the No. 86 Porsche contacting the outer barrier) the SunTrust car was in 14th place. Angelelli pitted, as did many vehicles, and emerged from the pit in a remarkably brief 25 seconds, although the SunTrust car did not take on new tires, just fuel. The pit crew's quick effort allowed Angelelli to push into 6th position by lap 25.

A second caution flag was thrown on Lap 26, but the No. 10 SunTrust car opted to stay out this time. Angelelli continued pressing the race leaders and battled his way into the second position before bringing the car into the pits on lap 53 for a 44-second stop for tires, fuel and a driver change to SunTrust car owner/driver Wayne Taylor.

"We were very fast, but in the first pit we didn't change the tires," said Angelelli, who won the 2005 Rolex 24 at Daytona with teammates Wayne Taylor and Emmanuel Collard. "So, we were able to gain with the short pit, but after a while the car started suffering as the tires grew older. But, I'm very happy to be doing so well by pit stop two."
