TRG's Marks to Start Fifth in Today's Brumos 250; Three time Rolex 24 winner Buckler back behind wheel
Daytona Beach, FL, (July 4, 2009) - TRG's Justin Marks will start the Brumos 250 at Daytona International Speedway from the third row for this afternoon's 2:00 p.m. start. Kevin Buckler, TRG team owner, drove to a ninth place qualifying effort with John Potter to start tenth and Josemanuel Gutierrez to go away from the start in 14th.
Dayt july qual TRG took the top two positions in GT with their No. 67 TRG team winning the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona in late January, followed closely by the No. 66 TRG entry. The team of Justin Marks and Andy Lally in the No. 67 Construct Corps/Kartel Motorsports/No Fear Energy Drinks/Voodoo Ride/K1 Speed/Gemstone Winery/TRG Porsche GT3 are looking to repeat their early season glory at the World Center of Racing. Marks ran a qualifying time of 1:52.466.
"I think I might have missed the best part of the tires in that session," Marks said. "I also had a little opportunity to draft which I wasn't able to take full advantage of during the session. Everything is good. We have a consistent car. The track has low grip all the way around, as low as I've seen it here. We have a good long run car for the race. I am really excited to be a part of a one day show."
Kevin Buckler has posted wins at Daytona twice as a driver and once as an owner. Buckler won the Rolex 24 Hour in 2002 and then won the race overall in 2003. As a team owner he won the race again this past January. Buckler is teamed with Spencer Pumpelly in the No. 66 AXA/Wealth Management Strategies/TRG Porsche GT3. In his return behind wheel the Californian ran a qualifying lap time of 1:53.549 good for a solid ninth place on the grid.
"First time back in the car in a while, I was happy to poke around a little bit," Buckler said. "I wish I would have a little more practice time, it is a really condensed schedule today. I am taking a conservative approach, the last thing we can have on a one day practice, qualify and race schedule is to go off track. I am planning to do a good job and give Spencer a good car for the finish. I have a tenth here and tenth there in about every corner and I will work on that in the last session."
John Potter put in a lap of 1:53.707 good for a fifth row starting position. He and teammate Craig Stanton have shown a lot of speed today with Stanton leading the timing chart after the day's first practice session in the No. 65 Magnus Racing/TRG Porsche GT3.
"We have a fast car and a very fast driver with Craig this morning," Potter said. "Once again I am struggling a little with the gap to the car in front of me. The track is down on grip, especially in the rear. It is way down on grip from January. There is more traction than I thought there would be giving it is about a 100-degree heat index. We are looking to have a great day out there this afternoon."
Josemanuel Gutierrez posted a lap time of 1:56.065 and will start from the seventh row. The No. 68 Cohen Financial/Intercity Lines/TRG Porsche had some small issues this morning limiting track time for Guitierrez and teammate Scott Schroeder.
"The qualifying went fine," Guiterrez said. "We had a little issue in practice and had minimal laps. The guys made some changes and the car feels real good. We have some more track time before the race to get some more laps under our belt. The track does not have a lot of grip and in the heat this afternoon it will only get worse."
The 3.56-mile, 12-turn Daytona modified road course will see the Grand-Am Rolex Series take the start for their two-hour-and -twenty-minute race at approximately 2:00 p.m. and will be televised live on the SPEED Channel.
