Borkowski qualifies sixth for Daytona Finale in Supreme Exhaust Systems Products/RPW #95.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., Nov. 9 -- Mike Borkowski of Scottsdale, Ariz., a late entry onto the three-man driving squad for TRV Motorsport's Supreme Exhaust Systems Products/Racer Parts Wholesale/F1 of Boston Riley & Scott Chevy #95, qualified sixth Saturday afternoon at Daytona International Speedway for tomorrow's Dark Dog Grand American Finale.

The three-hour race will be broadcast live on SPEED Channel beginning at noon.

Sharing the driving duties with Borkowski are R.J. Valentine of Braintree, Mass., and team owner Tom Volk of Blissfield, Mich. The team, which is putting its car up for sale on Monday, is headquartered in Toledo, Ohio.

Borkowski, who is making his first start with TRV, recorded a qualifying time of 1:46.623 for an average speed of 120.199 mph during his fastest lap in the 15-minute qualifying session on the 3.56-mile road course. He'll line up in row three, beside the Miracle Motorsports Riley & Scott Ford, for the 1 p.m. start of tomorrow's race.

Didier Theys won the pole in the Doran-Lista #27, the only Dallara Judd in the field. The next five cars, including TRV's, are all Riley & Scotts with various powerplants.

A total of 46 cars are entered in the three-hour race, including 12 in the top class, Sports Racing Prototype, in which the TRV team competes.

The team has competed in only one other race this year, the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. Jeret Schroeder qualified the car 13th for that race in 1:47.437 and an average speed of 119.289. The car was involved in a major accident during that race, although John Schneider, who was driving at the time, escaped unhurt.

Team manager Mike Madden and the rest of the crew have worked very hard to get the car back into racing shape for this event, the last of an era in endurance sports car racing. A new Daytona Prototype class is taking this division's place in 2003.

"We had a problem with our engine yesterday afternoon; I don't know if we broke a rocker arm or bent it, but we had to wait for some parts to be delivered this morning," Borkowski related after qualifying. "We were able to do part of the morning practice session, but something came off in the fueling area this morning that cost us some more laps. But the team found the problem and fixed it right away; they've been working very hard.

"We got everything fixed and we did two real timed laps and one warm-up lap in qualifying," he continued. "The team has been doing a real nice job. The most positive change we made so far happened this morning, when we stiffened the front springs. That really helped. The car really felt good in qualifying. It's comfortable to drive. We don't have the budget to fight with the top SRP cars, but three hours is still a pretty long race so we'll just try to run fast, consistent laps and see where the chips fall.

"I really appreciate Tom Volk including me on his team this weekend," Borkowski added. "Everyone on the team really are wonderful people. It's a good experience and a fun time. They're really good guys."

Borkowski will start the race, as the rules stipulate the driver who qualifies the car must start it. He said the driving rotation hasn't been determined yet, but he suspects Valentine will drive second and Volk third.
