DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., (Nov. 6, 2002) -- The Daytona Prototype took its first laps in front of the public on Wednesday during the open testing for this weekend's Dark Dog Grand American Finale.

Brumos Racing, one of the leading teams participating in the development of the Daytona Prototype, put its FABCAR FDSC/03 Porsche-powered Daytona Prototype on the 3.56-mile road course for two test sessions with drivers Hurley Haywood, Scott Goodyear and David Donohue.

On Thursday, they'll have two more test sessions to continue the birthing process of the sleek, stylish car. The Daytona Prototype won't participate in this weekend's Dark Dog Grand American Finale. Its first race will be the 41st Rolex 24 At Daytona on Feb. 1-2.

The test sessions are a part of the process of preparing the Daytona Prototype for the twice-around the clock challenge. There will be another 36-endurance test at Daytona on Dec. 5-6-7 followed by open testing for all Grand American teams on Jan. 3-5.

"We're just chipping away at it,' Goodyear said. "The car goes faster every time we go out there. We're working on speed, driver comfort, but most of all, just understanding the car from a mechanical point of view and an aerodynamic view. It's brand new. We don't know anything about it. We're just out here learning."

Goodyear, an open-wheel racing veteran, is quite energized about participating in the developmental process of the Daytona Prototype.

"I've always enjoyed it because I like going out there and trying something and coming back in and speaking with the engineers and coming up with a game plan and following through on it," Goodyear said. "We'll just to continue working on it. We've got so many people here with Alex Job Racing, Brumos Racing and FABCAR building the car and Porsche doing the motor. It's a big undertaking here for something brand new to go on the race track, but it's going well."

Meanwhile in other testing news, the No. 27 Doran Lista Judd-powered Dallara, the winner of the 2002 Rolex 24 At Daytona, was the fastest during Wednesday's test with a lap of 125.115 mph. Didier Theys was behind the wheel of the SportsRacing Prototype entry.

Testing for Dark Dog Grand American Finale continues on Thursday and is free and open to the public with access to the Oldfield Grandstand through the lobby of DAYTONA USA.

Tickets for this weekend's Dark Dog Grand American Finale, which kicks off on Friday, can be purchased online at www.daytonainternationalspeedway.com or by calling the Speedway ticket office at (386) 253-7223.
