DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., (Dec. 7, 2002) -- A pair of Daytona Prototypes wrapped up the unique 34-hour endurance test on Saturday afternoon at Daytona International Speedway.

The endurance test session began on Thursday with a six-hour session. On Friday at 10 a.m., the Daytona Prototypes began a 28-hour session that concluded on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Brumos Racing shook down the No. 59 Porsche-powered FABCAR Daytona Prototypes with its entire driver lineup for both of their Daytona Prototype entries.

Five-time Rolex 24 At Daytona champion Hurley Haywood is serving as the lead driver in Brumos' No. 59 Daytona Prototype with IRL standout Scott Sharp, former IRL/CART star Scott Goodyear and J.C. France. David Donohue will lead the team's No. 58 entry with co-drivers Mike Borkowski, Wayne Jackson and Chris Bye.

Cegwa Sport completed its first test of their Toyota-powered FABCAR Daytona Prototype at the "World Center of Racing" with driver Darius Grala.

The Daytona Prototype will begin a new chapter in sports car racing history in the Feb. 1-2 Rolex 24 At Daytona as it becomes the new premier class of the Rolex Sports Car Series.

Haywood has participated in similar endurance tests at factory Porsche when new race cars were introduced and says this endurance test is very important in the continued development of the Daytona Prototype.

"We're going to be light years ahead of everybody else that's coming (for the Rolex 24) and we're very thankful that the Speedway has allowed us to do this," Haywood said. "When I drove for the factory Porsche team, this was a routine thing. We would go into a facility and run sometimes two 24-hour sessions on a car to see what was going to break and where the weak points are. For me, this is just standard practice in preparation for a 24-hour race."

Grala was also pleased with the results of the endurance test and is looking forward to the final Rolex 24 At Daytona test on Jan. 3-5.

"Certainly, we're leaving here much more prepared for the January test," Grala said. "Because it's a new car for me personally, it's also a brand new track because I've never been here. So I'm learning both. Come January, certainly we'll be coming back just working on going fast as opposed to testing the car or learning the track."

Next up on the testing schedule at Daytona is the Dunlop tire test in preparation for Daytona 200 Week in March. The three-day test begins on Monday is a section of the Oldfield Grandstand is open and free to the public with access through the lobby of DAYTONA USA.
