Daytona, Fla (5 February 2000 - 19:00) - The No. 27 Ferrari, which led throughout he first four hours, was sidelined with an engine fire, handing the lead to defending champions, Dyson Racing.
"Everything is in good shape around the engine," said Didier Theys, driver of the No. 27 Doran Enterprises car. "The engine caught fire. We had a backfire and the backfire burned the wire harness, it melted a couple of trumpets, it even melted one of the butterflies. Too much fuel was going into the engine. I don't know what happened. We've had one problem like this in the past, but that was after a pit stop. When you do a pit stop and you don't clean up the engine properly, too much fuel goes into the engine and it starts to burn."
"Ross (Bentley) was on the race track and it just happened when he downshifted. There's nothing you can do".
Before the fire, the Doran entry, driven by Theys, Bentley, Baldi and Lienhard, led by thirty seconds over the Dyson entry. "We were very conservative, the engine was running fine and we had good handling," Theys said. "We were just watching to see what the Dyson car was doing."
When asked if the Doran entry would return to competition, Theys replied, "We lost almost one hour and a half all ready and it will be another twenty minutes. We'll decide in a few minutes to see."
