Doug Goad in the Running for the Jim Trueman Award-DP Class

Jim Trueman, legendary road racer, was the inspiration for the Rolex Grand American Series driver award that goes to the top driver that also has a day job. Trueman owned a successful race team, race track and hotel chain. He won the Indianapolis 500 with driver Bobby Rahal behind the wheel. Trueman loved all forms of racing either from the owner's suite or on track.

Doug Goad, who is team owner and driver for the Spirit of Daytona is in the running for the inaugural Jim Trueman award. Not only is Goad a championship winning race car driver, he is also a successful entrepreneur who founded and operates an automotive company in Michigan that provides technological and engineering support to major automobile manufacturers. At age 22, Goad began his professional career working within the automobile industry it was also at that same time that he started racing cars. His first racecar was an Opel Manta. He then switched to running Firebirds and Corvettes and now he is in the 09 Pontiac-powered Crawford Daytona Prototype.

Goad is currently in the lead to be the first winner of the Jim Trueman Award by over 300 points. Goad currently has accumulated 2456 points with includes the points he gained at Watkins Glen, NY. Drivers accumulate points by their finishing position combined with the amount of miles driven at each event. Goad is looking to accumulate more points after the EMCO Gears Classic at Mid-Ohio this Saturday.

When asked if Goad ever wanted to race in NASCAR, he replied, " When I was younger I wanted to give it a try, but it is 36 races a year, I never would have been able to have started my company and have had a family if I took up the series." Goad also has a wonderful family in the metro-Detroit area. His wife Diane has a successful contemporary design jewelry store, Spiralz, which is one of the sponsors of the 09DP. Goad has a daughter and son both in college at Michigan State University. Both want to follow in their father's footsteps and race as well. They can usually be found at the track either working in the pit with the crew or cheering their father on.

Goad has been able to establish himself as a wonderful father, successful entrepreneur and winning racecar driver. The Jim Trueman Award is given out at the end of series banquette in November. Hopefully Goad will have the honor of being the first ever recipient of the Jim Trueman Award.
