DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (May 18, 2000) -- After three events on superspeedway/infield "roval" courses, the Grand American Road Racing Association is set to visit a pair of America's top permanent road circuits. The new sanctioning body will be at Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Conn., in the May 26-29 Dodge Dealers 150, and then travels to the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course north of Columbus for the June 2-4 Grand-Am 250.
The Memorial Day Dodge Dealers 150 at Lime Rock Park couldn't come at a better time for Grand-Am owner/driver Rob Dyson, who lives less than an hour from the 1.54-mile Connecticut circuit.
"There's nothing like racing at Lime Rock," said Dyson. "It is a short track that's remarkably fast. There's terrific, very fast racing, and the park-like surroundings and views from the hillsides and lawns overlooking the track make Lime Rock unique from any other track in this country.
"Also, it's great to be racing so close to home, where our families and friends can all see us work."
Dyson will field a pair of Ford-powered Norcold/Thetford/Goodyear Riley & Scotts for the event. The Pleasant Valley, N.Y. driver will team with Elliott-Forbes Robinson in the No. 20 entry, with veteran Dyson driver Butch Leitzinger joining the team for the first time in 2000, paired with Englishman James Weaver in the No. 16 entry.
"Lime Rock is probably one of the most challenging circuits in the country," said Leitzinger," a winner at the circuit in both sports cars and NASCAR Busch North competition. "It's a very high speed circuit, with very little margin for error. You've got to have a lot of confidence in your car. That's the nice thing about driving for Dyson. We've been racing the car for five years, and know what to expect from it.
"James (Weaver) is a very fantastic driver," Leitzinger added. "He's very fast, but also easy on the car and fantastic on the setup. I know the car's going to be great and James will do his end of the job. It's going to be up to me to do my part. I think we should have a very good combination."
Dyson Racing opened the season with a SportsRacer class victory in the Rolex 24 At Daytona. The team dominated the race at Phoenix before a cut tire led to a third place finish, and then lost second in the recent race at Homestead-Miami Speedway when the gearbox failed with only three laps remaining.
The Dodge Dealers 150 will include a pair of 150-mile races, for the open cockpit SportsRacers and SportsRacer Lights, followed by the three GT classes (GTO, GTU and American GT).
Practice and qualifying for the Dodge Dealers 150 will be held on Friday and Saturday, May 26-27, with no on-track activity on Sunday. Memorial Day activities begin at 9 a.m. Tickets are available by calling (800) RACE LRP, or at the gate.
