DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., (Aug. 23, 2001) -- Clint Field has already put his name into the sportscar record books at Daytona International Speedway when he became the youngest driver to compete and finish in the Rolex 24 At Daytona earlier this year at the "World Center of Racing."
During the 39th annual Rolex 24 At Daytona, the 18-year-old Field, along with his dad Jon, his Uncle Joel and Carl Rosenblad, finished fourth in the SportsRacing Prototype class and 21st overall driving the No. 37 Banana Joe's/Intersport Racing Judd-powered Lola.
Field, of Dublin, Ohio, would like to go a step further at Daytona by winning on the famed 3.56-mile road course. He'll get that opportunity in the Sept. 14-16 Grand-Am Finale when he returns to the Speedway to cap off the Grand American Rolex Road Racing Series season.
According to Field, Intersport Racing will be fielding two Lolas in the Rolex Sports Car Series race on Sunday, Sept. 16 at noon. Field and his Uncle Joel will drive one Lola while his dad Jon and Oliver Gavin will pilot the other Lola. Field will have some serious competition in the SportsRacing Prototype class from Dyson Racing, Robinson Racing and Lista Doran.
"I'm excited about coming back," Field said. "The Rolex was my first real race. I hadn't had a lot of experience before that race. I think after a whole year of experience at a lot of tracks, I think I'm going to be a lot faster and smoother and race with the guys a lot better."
Field, who has only competed in seven of the series' 10 races this year, is a respectable 11th in SportsRacing Prototype driver standings. Meanwhile, Intersport Racing is fourth in the team standings.
"Our hopes are to win," Field said. "Hopefully, a first and a second. That would be awesome."
Field says the team's Rolex 24 At Daytona experience this year will be helpful in preparing for the Grand-Am Finale.
"This year, the Rolex was basically a sprint race for us," Field said. "We lost a clutch in the beginning. We were playing catchup from Hour 3 on. It was like a sprint race for us and (the Grand-Am Finale) will be no different.
"For the Lola and our team, we'll set the car up more for the infield with a little bit more downforce. We might be a little bit slower at Daytona where Dyson Racing and Robinson were a lot faster in the straightaway. We could keep up with them in the infield. We think that's better."
Field got started racing at age 9 and has competed in shifter karts, the American Cities Racing League, Skip Barber Pro Racing and the Grand-Am Cup. Now, he's enjoying driving against some of the top sports car drivers in the world like Hurley Haywood, Butch Leitzinger, Rob Dyson, Elliott Forbes-Robinson and Jack Baldwin. He also likes racing with his family.
"We've always been pushing each other the whole season," Field said. "We're always trying to get better from each other. Being with your family, you don't have to act different around them."
Grand-Am Finale tickets can be purchased by calling the Speedway ticket office at (386) 253-7223.
