Fittipaldi Joins Borcheller for Final Four Races of 2004 Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (August 18, 2004) -- One of the most legendary names in motor racing has joined the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series, as Kodak Bell Motorsports announced today that accomplished Brazilian racer Christian Fittipaldi will join 2003 Daytona Prototype champion Terry Borcheller in the team's No. 54 Pontiac Doran for the final four races of the 2004 season.
Fittipaldi--who brings considerable experience from Formula 1, Champ Car and NASCAR--joined Borcheller, Andy Pilgrim and Forest Barber to win the 2004 season-opening Rolex 24 At Daytona. A resident of Key Biscayne, Fla., Fittipaldi is set to make his Rolex Series return near his home in the Miami 250 at Homestead-Miami Speedway on the weekend of September 10-12.
"I'm happy to be racing again with the same team that won the 24 Hours of Daytona this year," Fittipaldi said. "I hope Bell Motorsports, Terry and myself can put a string of four strong races together so that the team is in a good position for 2005."
In addition to winning the prestigious Rolex 24 At Daytona, Kodak Bell Motorsports finished on the podium with a third-place performance in May's 6 Heures du Circuit Mont-Tremblant with Borcheller and Pilgrim sharing the controls. In the Sahlen's 200 at The Glen last week, Borcheller teamed with General Motors factory driver Oliver Gavin and finished fourth after leading eight laps.
After winning the Formula 3000 championship in 1991, Fittipaldi drove in Formula 1 for three seasons. He began his Champ Car career in 1995 and won Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year honors with a second-place finish. He had two victories and 20 podium finishes in an eight-year Champ Car career before turning his attention to NASCAR in 2003 with Petty Enterprises. Including the Rolex 24 triumph, Fittipaldi's sports car career highlights also include a victory the 24-hour race at Belgium's famous Spa-Francorchamps circuit. He is the nephew of Formula 1 and Champ Car champion and two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Emerson Fittipaldi.
