Jon Fogarty may have kick-started his Gainsco Auto Group return to the Grand-Am Rolex Series title chase on a blustery Detroit Friday as he outdueled Max Angelelli for the Daytona Prototype pole at Belle Isle Park. The pole was the 20th DP pole of Fogarty’s career, but was his first of the season.
Fogarty and teammate Alex Gurney have had a tough time getting back to the form of their 2007 and 2009 title winning campaigns, currently languishing in seventh in the series points. The team got a big boost from the former open-wheel pilot however as Fogarty hung up a best lap of 82.369 seconds around the 2.1-mile Belle Isle layout to take the pole.
“That’s really the only way we’re going to make it happen it to come out here and win races,” Fogarty said. “Starting up front will be very helpful but anything can happen and there’s some very challenging competition out there.”
Fogarty held the lead for the entire second half of the qualifying session, but had to sweat it out at the end with Angelelli put up his best time of 82.445 seconds on his last trip around the Detroit island circuit.
Terry Borcheller and Darren Law will make up the second row for tomorrow’s race, giving Corvette the top four spots on the grid. Memo Corvette comes to the home of Chevrolet on a roll, having won each of the last three starts – two of those coming courtesy of Angelelli and the #10 SunTrust Racing squad.
Guy Cosmo put his Extreme Speed Motorsports Ferrari atop the GT class in qualifying, carding a best time of 87.967 seconds. Cosmo, who partners with Scott Sharp on a time that usually campaigns in the American Le Mans Series, outlasted John Edwards’ Stevenson Camaro to take the pole. Edwards, who has finished second and fourth in his two series starts this year, will start on the outside of the front row.
