Rx.com G&W Motorsports Holds Successful Tests at Barber, VIR
ALTON, Va. (July 19, 2004) -- The Rx.com G&W Motorsports team held two successful tests at Virginia International Raceway and Barber Motorsports Park last week. Daytona Prototype drivers Cort Wagner (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Brent Martini (Laguna Beach, Calif.) piloted the Rx.com No. 81 BMW Doran JE4 during the tests.
The two days served dual purposes for the team, not only allowing Martini to better familiarize himself with the Daytona Prototype, but also allowing the team to shake down the car following its substantial repairs.
The tests were the first time the Rx.com BMW had taken to the track since its involvement in a severe crash with the Bell Motorsports No. 54 Pontiac Doran during the Paul Revere 250 at Daytona International Speedway on July 1. After being sent to the Doran Designs headquarters in Lebanon, Ohio, the No. 81 BMW Doran was returned to the team back in racing condition just in time for testing.
Although Wagner has been at the at the wheel of the Rx.com car the entire season, Martini was forced to sit out the first three races while he recovered from surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff. While he has improved his lap times at each race, the test sessions were key in putting the 2003 Rolex Series GT champion back in championship-racing form.
"Testing was great for the entire Rx.com effort," said Wagner, who shared the GT crown with his co-driver last year. "We found out a bit about the car, but mostly Brent got the track time he has been missing since the start of the year.
"Because we had a number of races that required three drivers since his return, Brent never really had a chance to find his groove in this type of car. This testing allowed him enough time to gather his thoughts and put his head down to do some seriously quick lapping, which is exactly what he did," Wagner continued.
Next up for the Rx.com G&W Motorsports team is the EMCO Gears Mid-Ohio Road Racing Classic, Aug. 6-8. The team will return to Virginia International Raceway and Barber Motorsports Park for rounds 10 and 11 of the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series with the VIR 400 on Oct. 1-3, and Barber 250 at The Park, Oct. 8-10.
G&W Motorsports, based outside of Danville, Va., at Virginia International Raceway, is the most successful team in the Rolex Sports Car Series, capturing the inaugural GT championship in 2000, both the GT and GTS championships in 2001 and the SRP II championship in 2003. G&W Motorsports is the only team to compete in every Rolex Series race since the series' inception, accumulating 15 class wins and 45 podium finishes in class.
