Craig Stanton Returns To Defend Homestead title

HOMESTEAD, Fla., March 2, 2005 -- Craig Stanton returns to Homestead-Miami Speedway (HMS) this weekend to defend his 2004 Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series SGS (now GT class) victory. After opening his season with a fourth-place finish in the Rolex 24 At Daytona, the longtime resident of Long Beach, Calif. will launch a full attack for his second Grand American championship with Saturday's Grand Prix of Miami. He will do so with a return to the familiar confines of a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup entry of Synergy Racing (Alton, Vir.). Stanton, the 2004 Grand-Am Cup Champion, will pilot the No. 80 Synergy Racing Porsche in the newly revised Grand Touring (GT) class with longtime co-driver David Murry (Cumming, Ga.). The same combination of drivers won a remarkable last to first victory here last season.

Stanton took three of his seven 2004 Rolex Series top-ten finishes, including one top-five, with Synergy Racing (then G&W Motorsports). All of those top-tens were earned with Murry or fellow Synergy teammate Mai Van Wijk (Houston, Tex.). The Grand Prix of Miami will take the checkered flag on Saturday, March 5th at 3 pm (EST). Live coverage can be seen on SPEED Channel with live timing and scoring available at www.grandamerican.com.

Craig Stanton:

about the Grand Prix of Miami: "This is the first race of 2005 in a lot of ways for me. With the Tafel-Baldwin team we prepared for months before Daytona. Now, with Synergy, we are preparing for the rest of the year. So, this feels like a brand new season. I am really looking forward to this weekend. David, Harry (Haggard, engineer) and I have worked closely over the years and we already have about three strategies for this race. We're going to have to be on our game with engineering, strategy as well as driving. Harry was on board with David and me here last year and we definitely had a great finish. I'm looking forward to a good race at Homestead and a good start to the rest of the season. We've been talking for the last two months preparing for this race and we're all pretty optimistic."

about returning to Synergy Racing: "This is a pretty unique situation since David will be racing in both the [number] 80 and 81 Synergy Porsches. So, both cars will be working really closely. Cole (Scrogham, owner) and Price (Cobb, director of racing operations) have been nothing but gracious and they are on a mission to do as well as we can. I go in with fourth-place points and I want to gather as many points for the championship as I can."
