ROLEX 24 HOURS of DAYTONA Daytona International Speedway Friday - Feb. 4, 2000

Notes Hybrid Racing drivers Boris Said, Mark Simo and Mark Sutherland recorded the eighth fastest time in final practice for the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona today.

The trio of drivers (Chris Bingham is the fourth) drove the Arterial Vascular Engineering (AVE)/Riley & Scott/Ford, to a fast time of 1:47.235, for a speed of 119.513 mph.

Bingham, 28, of Seattle, was the only Hybrid driver not to go on the track.

Said & Mark Simo, both of Carlsbad, Calif., and Sutherland, of Los Gatos, Calif., put in several laps around the 3.56-mile track. The team will compete in the Sports Racer division of the Grand American Road Racing event.

Team owner Rod Everett said the Hybrid Racing crew will commence on an engine and gearbox change and may test tomorrow at a smaller track outside of the Daytona International Speedway.

Everett indicated Said would start the race. The race begins at 1 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.

On Thursday night, Hybrid Racing crewmember Bob "Chief" Highlands was slightly injured when he was pinned between two cars outside of the Hybrid Racing garage. Highlands, 48, of Jacksonville, Fla., was assisting in moving the Hybrid Riley & Scott car, while another crew was moving their vehicle.

Highlands was taken to Halifax Medical Center, where he underwent a CAT scan and released.

Quotes "I had a little push, but that's normal for Daytona. I almost went flat out in the Kink, but there were cars there and I didn't want to do it. It was a nice day." - Boris Said, Driver

"I shortened my learning curve because of last night (minor damage to the car when he hit the wall exiting Turn 3). I was ultra conservative out there today and not pushing it. I'll be using the race to ease into the car. My confidence is back and I feel great. I won't be second guessing any drivers out there tomorrow." - Mark Simo, Driver

"I really struggled under braking today, but it was great on the track. The crew did a great job from last night." - Rick Sutherland, Driver

"It wasn't a bad day. We had the car in total race trim with three-fourths of the tank full. We ran it down until the last five laps, then the car was on half tanks. Traffic was a problem, but it will be in the race too. We're going to change the engine and gearbox and we may test tomorrow before the race at another track outside of here. It all depends on the progress of the engine change. The guys all did a super job." - Rod Everett, Team Manager
