Chris Bingham had the honors of qualifying the Hybrid Racing Arterial Vascular Engineering (AVE)/Riley & Scott/Ford, for the Rolex 24 Hours of Dayton today.
Bingham, 28, of Seattle, one of four drivers for Hybrid Racing (Boris Said & Mark Simo, both of Carlsbad, Calif., and Rick Sutherland, of Los Gatos, Calif., round out the team) qualified 11th in the Sports Racer division of the Grand American Road Racing event. Bingham's best speed was 120.857 mph.
Bingham said he was caught in traffic, then after coming in for a change of tires, a light rain started and hindered the team's effort.
Nearly hindering the team's effort was the fact the Ford engine was delivered, not at the Hybrid garage, but rather the Shipping & Receiving building outside of the track. Compounding that was the ring & pinion parts that were delivered from England, where held up in customs in Kentucky. According to Hybrid Team Manager Rod Everett, the much-needed items will be in and on the car in time for the race.
Simo was the only Hybrid driver who did not make an appearance in the car.
Quotes (On qualifying) "I got caught up in traffic in the first five laps of qualifying. I was between some slow and fast guys and just got caught. When I came in for the tire change, it started to rain, so I guess I was in the wrong place at the wrong time."
(On the first practice) "Everyone's all over the place, but I figured it was going to be that way. Everyone is sorting out their cars. It felt good out there." - Chris Bingham, Driver
(On the first practice) "It felt great, but the traffic was not. You caught them and then you stopped. It reminded me of the Los Angeles freeways at rush hour." - Boris Said, Driver
(On the first practice) "The car ran great. I was flat out on the banking and it felt good. If it (the car) runs like that for the full twenty-four hours, we'll win the race." - Rick Sutherland, Driver
"I'm disappointed with the qualifying. We had a car block us on the first set of tires and then the rain caught us on the second set. We have a much better car than that, it was just that we got caught a lap too late." - Rod Everett, Team Manager
