ALEX LLOYD TO PULL DOUBLE DUTY IN INFINEON WITH SPORTS CAR DRIVE
SONOMA, Calif. -- Other than chasing down his first Indy Pro Series championship, Alex Lloyd has taken on a second drive for this weekend at the Infineon Raceway as he has joined Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates in the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Special Reserve to co-drive with Michael Valiante in the #19 Z-Line Designs/Mission Residential/Lexus-Riley Daytona Prototype for Saturday's Armed Forces Grand-Am 250.
The opportunity with the team arose when Valiante's normal co-driver, Rob Finlay, decided to take the weekend off to nurse a shoulder injury and prepare for the final round at the Miller Motorsport Park in September.
For Lloyd, the opportunity to showcase his talents to another group of fans and car owners is something that he's excited about.
"I am extremely happy to join Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates for this weekend's Rolex race," Lloyd said. "My time in the Indy Pro Series has allowed me to watch Chip Ganassi's success on the track in the IndyCar Series. This is a team that I really admire and I am anticipating the chance to drive something new this weekend."
Lloyd's car owner in the Indy Pro Series, Sam Schmidt, was just as excited by the opportunity presented to Lloyd.
"It's an excellent opportunity for Alex," Schmidt said. "When Mike Hull called to ask permission for him to run in the Grand-Am event, we didn't want to stand in his way. He was obviously quite impressive in his IndyCar Series test last week with the Target Chip Ganassi team, which is why they thought of him first when they needed a driver.
"Alex is also extremely mature and physically fit, so we don't believe he'll have any issues running both series this weekend. We are very proud of his accomplishments in 2007 and pleased that our team can be a part of this effort."
The drive is Lloyd's first in a sports car. As such, he spent Thursday turning his first laps in the vehicle.
He said, "The car is quite nice, actually. It's a bit like the Indy Pro Series car as it's a bit heavy but has a lot of power. I had loads of fun running it around here. I'll definitely be learning a lot from Michael Valiente and the Ganassi team this weekend and hope to bring home a strong finish.
"I can't thank Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates enough for the opportunity."
The Rolex Series race will be on Saturday with television coverage provided by SPEED TV. The broadcast begins at 8 p.m. edt.
Lloyd's other two races in the Indy Pro Series will be at 2:45 p.m. edt on Saturday and 1:20 p.m. edt on Sunday. Both races can be viewed live on indycar.com.
The possibility exists for Lloyd to have three solid finishes this weekend.
"Perhaps he can win three races this weekend," Schmidt said. "Who knows!"
