CyberSpeed Racing's Ave Finishes 23rd In DP Sprint Race Saturday at Laguna Seca
MONTEREY, Calif., May 6 - The CyberSpeed Racing team learned some things in the 30-minute Daytona Prototype race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca Saturday that should help it do better in the longer Road & Track 250 race here tomorrow.
The team's lead driver, Tony Ave of Mooresville, N.C., finished 23rd in the team's Riley Pontiac No. 97 in the 30-minute sprint, which carried full Rolex Series points. His co-driver, Skip Cummins of Houston, will start in that spot in the longer point race here tomorrow, which will be broadcast live on SPEED at 3 p.m. Eastern time.
"The car was pretty good, but basically what happened was the spring and shock combination that we had wore out the tires too fast," Ave explained afterwards. "We were fast to begin with, but then the tires started to go away and I flat-spotted them. I adjusted the brake bias and then the car just got away from me and I spun in Turn 11. After that it was just driving around, trying to finish."
Ave started 18th Saturday afternoon after qualifying in that spot Saturday morning with a lap in 1:25.159. His fastest lap in the 30-minute race, which was led wire-to-wire by Patrick Long in the Ruby Tuesday No. 23, was a 1:26.303 run on lap 16 of the 21-lap race.
Ave moved up to 16th at the start of the race, but Adrian Fernandez got around him to drop him to 17th on lap two. He ran in 17th for most of the race, right behind the Kodak EasyShare No. 77, before the spin.
The team was hampered by a gearbox problem on Thursday, so its first chance to really dial in the car came during yesterday's practice sessions.
That work will continue tomorrow.
"Tomorrow morning Skip will scuff three sets of tires and evaluate some things, and then we'll be good to go," Ave said.
"We're frustrated that we're not where we want to be, but considering the work the crew did to get the car ready after the crash at VIR coupled with how close the field is and the fact that we haven't had the time to do some updates that we're planning, we're still optimistic," he added. "Anything can happen in tomorrow's race; we just need to be there at the end."
In addition to the TV coverage, live timing and scoring is planned for grandamerican.com. The team's Web site is under development at cyberspeedracing.us. Other information can be found at laguna-seca.com and restartcommunications.com.
